One of the objectives of LYS is to broarden our young musicians' multiculturel horizon. Every three or four years, LYS organizes a major international performance tour. During these tours, LYS students get a chance to perform music for their young foreign hosts and learn about them and their culture.
The orchestra's extensive travel history has included visits to Vienna, Austria; Prague, Czechoslovakia; and Budapest, Hungary. It has also appeared at national music conferences in Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City. Recently, the Orchestra has been involved in international performances and cultural exchanges with youth orchestras in Mexico City, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou, China. As part of the Chinese exchange, LYS and the orchestra from Guangzhou gave a joint performance in the fall of 2000.
The symphony's musical tour experiences have traditionally been financed partly by contributions from Lincoln area businesses, individuals and private foundations and other Nebraska foundations but largely by the fundraising efforts of the students who have made their trips possible .
